Deep Ancestry DNA testing traces both ancient ancestry (50,000 - 100,000 years ago) and recent ancestry (100 - 1,000 years ago) by using haplogroup testing which finds the origins of ancestral lines. This requires that the maternal and paternal lineage is analyzed separately. We analyze the Y chromosome to determine an individual’s paternal lineage, or mitochondrial DNA to determine an individual’s maternal lineage.
The Maternal Ancestry test is based on testing regions of the mitochondrial DNA and will provide information about an individual's mother's mother's mother's etc. lineage. The mitochondrial DNA is a circular DNA strand that is passed down from a mother to all of her children regardless of gender so maternal ancestry testing may be completed for both males and females.
The Paternal Ancestry test is based on testing certain markers on the Y Chromosome and provides information about an individual's father's father's father's etc. lineage. Only males carry the Y Chromosome, and it is passed down strictly from father to male child. Therefore, paternal ancestry testing can only be carried out for males.
